Sacred Heart University
The Department of History of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT, invites applications to fill a tenure-track position in 19th-century American history at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in September, 2008. The position carries a 4-course per semester teaching requirement; normally, two sections each semester of a US history survey, one elective in some aspect of 19th-century US political or cultural history, and one section of a core curriculum course, HICC 101, The Human Journey: Historical Paths to Civilization. An additional ancillary field would be desirable. Unique to SHU, HICC 101 covers the ancient world through the Renaissance, with special attention to the Catholic intellectual tradition, focusing students' attention on the ways by which humans have addressed the central and enduring questions of human life. In addition, one quarter of the course introduces the classical period in China up to the Qin-Han period. The course methodology exposes students to primary sources that speak to the essential questions, and all faculty members are expected to become competent users of instructional technology (Blackboard).
We also expect our candidate to participate in our senior capstone course, Senior Thesis, a year-long research project that each of our roughly 85 majors completes under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Sacred Heart is primarily an undergraduate institution that strongly emphasizes teaching.
