CLEMENTS LIBRARY The library was founded in 1923 by Michigan industrialist William L. Clements, a regent and alumnus of the University of Michigan. He donated the funds for the library's elegant neo-classical building, located on central campus in Ann Arbor. Clements also donated his extraordinary Americana collection -- 20,000 rare books, 2,000 volumes of early newspapers, several hundred maps, and the papers of Lord Shelburne, the British Prime Minister who negotiated the peace ending the Revolutionary War. Sacred Heart University
The Department of History of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT, invites applications to fill a tenure-track position in 19th-century American history at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in September, 2008. The position carries a 4-course per semester teaching requirement; normally, two sections each semester of a US history survey, one elective in some aspect of 19th-century US political or cultural history, and one section of a core curriculum course, HICC 101, The Human Journey: Historical Paths to Civilization. An additional ancillary field would be desirable. Unique to SHU, HICC 101 covers the ancient world through the Renaissance, with special attention to the Catholic intellectual tradition, focusing students' attention on the ways by which humans have addressed the central and enduring questions of human life. In addition, one quarter of the course introduces the classical period in China up to the Qin-Han period. The course methodology exposes students to primary sources that speak to the essential questions, and all faculty members are expected to become competent users of instructional technology (Blackboard).
We also expect our candidate to participate in our senior capstone course, Senior Thesis, a year-long research project that each of our roughly 85 majors completes under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Northern Arizona University
The Department of History at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the field of history and social studies secondary education. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses for pre-service and in-service teachers, clinical supervision of student teachers, the development of program assessments, and the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships with Arizona social studies teachers, especially those located in underserved rural and reservation communities. The candidate is also expected to conduct an active program of research and scholarship in the fields of history education and/or the history of education. Required qualifications: A doctorate in the field of history, history education, or closely related field (ABD will be considered if dissertation is near completion). University of Virginia
The American Studies Program at the University of Virginia seeks an Assistant Professor with demonstrated excellence in interdisciplinary teaching and research to begin August 25,2008. The successful applicant will be expected to teach the AMST 301/302 American Studies year-long core seminar and other courses in the applicant's area of expertise. PhD expected at the time of appointment. Area of specialization is open, but ability to offer courses in American Religious traditions, Transnationalism, Ethnic Studies, or Comparative Ethnic Studies would be especially welcome. Applicants may work in English, History, Media Studies, or Religious Studies. Appointments will be joint with one of these departments and American Studies. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Latina/Latino Studies Program and the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invite applications for a full-time tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Latina/Latino Studies and History to begin August 16, 2008. Preference will be given to candidates with an exemplary record of research in 19th and 20th century Mexican American and/or Chicana/o history. This will be a joint appointment 50/50 between Latina/Latino Studies and the Department of History.
